The Hospital Dos de Maig
The North African campaign, seen closely
In 1924, Queen Victoria Eugenia - member of the Red Cross Girls - inaugurated the military hospital that would take the name of the organization. However, historic circumstances were very pessimistic. From 1920 to 1926, the city suffered the direct consequences of the Rif War, also known as the North African Campaign. The outbreak of the armed conflict was paralleled with the construction of the sanitary house, with the main purpose of caring for the wounded men who returned from Morocco.
Only a decade later, Hospital de la Creu Roja played an important role in a new war episode: the Spanish Civil War. After a long period of darkness, the postwar period became the golden stage of the centre. During the forties, the hospital became one of the medical institutions of reference in Catalunya, especially for the nursing schools. In 1999, the centre was integrated into the public hospitals network, having the most outstanding professionals in all specialties.
But the construction of another hospital, Hospital de Sant Joan Despí Moisès Broggi, forced the management to refocus its function. Nowadays, it is a Primary Care Center (CAP), managed by Consorci Sanitari Integral, which deals with only minor pathologies. In the case of medical complications, the patients are taken to Hospital de Sant Pau.
