The balconies of Barcelona. Celebrities getting some fresh air
Restoring the city without forgetting our cultural past
It is a proven fact that the 1992 Olympic Games meant a before and after for Barcelona. Political parties, institutions and social entities became involved in the transformation of the city and tried to offer the best image in an international scale, but also at the local level, for the citizens. Projects like ”Barcelona, posa’t guapa” promoted in the late eighties served to welcome new buildings and facilities that revitalized the neighbourhoods.
The City Council commissioned the French company Cité Création in 1989 to produce a mural that was baptized as Els balcons de Barcelona. The work simulates the façade of a building with several balconies and a famous neighbourhood; a group of twenty cultural celebrities and personalities. From Christopher Columbus or the writer Mercè Rodoreda, to the painter Pablo Picasso or the actress Margarida Xirgu.
The production, which occupies around 500 square meters, can be found in Plaça de Pablo Neruda, in Carrer d’ Enamorats, the old square Plaça de la Hispanitat. The last name disappeared from the city's nomenclature in April 2017.
