Alberto Bermúdez: Barcelona Ilustrada

Barcelona Ilustrada was born thanks to Alberto Bermúdez, a Barcelona local who, during the pandemic, decided to buy himself a pencil and start drawing. Although his professional background lies in a completely different field, he has always had a creative side that he’s been able to develop and express through this project.

“In March 2020, after several days stuck at home, juggling my usual job with the occasional class I teach, I bought a pencil and started drawing,” Alberto recalls.

That simple act marked the beginning of his daily moments of disconnection — and with them came his first creations. He began sharing his illustrations with friends, and encouraged by their warm response, he continued exploring and giving shape to his creative world.

In July 2022, while riding his Vespa down Carrer d’Aragó, he stopped to take a closer look at the sign atop the building at Plaça Letamendi No. 1–2, the former headquarters of an insurance company. As soon as he got home, he grabbed his iPad and drew it. That became the first piece in a series of illustrations of the city — a visual journey that blends the Barcelona of the past with the Barcelona of today.

His artwork features iconic places that have since disappeared, such as the legendary Vinçon store, Pokin’s burger joint, or the old Apolo Theatre — all brought back to life with a sense of nostalgia and contemporary flair.

Each illustration is part of a limited edition of 50 prints, individually signed and numbered by the artist.

“Barcelona Ilustrada is the Barcelona of my imagination, my memories, my childhood, and my everyday life. It's the city where I grew up, where I live, and where amazing things happen every single day,” says Alberto.
